Colour Analysis

Another important factor I had to consider was the colours I was going to use on my cover. Before I could decide what colours I would use, I looked at a few and analysed them. I found that some colours were hard to read and therefore they would not be good to use for large amounts of texts. Other colours were only easy to read depending on the background colour. From looking at these samples, I was able to decide that I would use black, white and red for the text on my cover. I picked these colours because I think that they really complement each other and they fit my 'pop' genre. The black and white are simple yet effective and red stands out, as it is bright and bold.

Starting My Magazine

The image I initally took to use on my cover.
When starting my music magazine was what image I would use on my cover. I decided that it would be a good idea to initially start by taking pictures of objects relating to music, I gave myself the genre of 'punk' as a starting idea to see what ideas would develop. I hoped that this would give me some indication as to what image I would like to use on my cover. I decided that I would like to use this image of the wall as a background and then overlay a picture of my model onto it. However, after creating this I then decided that I would rather have a plain block colour background with my image on top. I did this because I had then decided that the genre of my music magazine would be 'pop' and that this cover would be more suitable and appealing to my target audience.

Designing My Masthead

Once I had decided what colours I was going to be using it was time for me I create my masthead. I had decided to call my magazine 'pulse' and therefore wanted to find a font that what fit this title. I also wanted to ensure that my masthead stood out and was eye catching. It had to draw in my target audience but at the same time look professional and fit the rest of the cover. I decided that I would place my masthead at the top left of my cover as this is the best place for visibility.

Survey

survery

During the research of my magazine, I conducted a survey to find out the opinions and views of my target population. I asked both males and females as my magazine is not going to be gender specific.

Colour Analysis

I analysed different shades of two colours to help me decide which would be best to use for the different features of my magazine, e.g, backgrounds, main text font colour, headings...

Possible Backgrounds

This image suggests a peaceful, calm and relaxing environment which matches well with any genre of music. This would be a good background because it is light and text could be easily read on it.

This is a good background as you could easily read any colour cover lines.
Also when I add a picture of a person or a band, the background will look like the picture was taken there.
This image could be used in any genre of music magazine.
I would be able to fit an image of a keyboard in well with my genre of pop. However, the black keys on the piano makes the background look very busy and it would be hard to find the right colour font to write my cover lines on.

Analysing fonts

Red is a vibrant colour that represents happiness and having a black outline makes the text stand out. It is obvious that the font is specially made because the 2 c’s are different. This makes the font original and only known to coca cola.  The font is in lowercase as today, text written in uppercase comes across as being shouted. However, this may differ 50 years ago when the logo was created.

The golden arches are well known for mcdonalds. The yellow represents happiness. The colours are bold and the logo looks like chips and the box.
The font that McDonalds is written in is easy to read ad quite bold to stand out.

The walker’s font is also well known. With the ‘yellow circle’ behind it represents a potato which crisps are made from. The font is a pretty boring font however it works for the brand. By having it in capitals, the brand name stands out. It is easy to read and you would be able to notice it on different packaging.

The blackberry logo is well known. As it is a business phone the font is neat and easily read. As it is a business phone the punctuation is correct with the capital B’s. Also the text is bold and easy to read so it is easily noticed.

Taking Pictures

For my magazine I had to take my own original pictures. I used a variety of both mid-length and long shots. I took these pictures behind a blank background so it would be easier for me to edit them. Once I have decided on the images I want to use, I will edit them using photoshop.

Brainstorming Ideas

To begin with, I did a brainstorm of relevant words/ideas for my magazine. I researched into what different magazines of this type were already on the market and the different genres of these magzines. Before starting my magazine, I will need to decide on a name for it. I did this by brainstorming a few names and ideas.
